ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE
“A Scout is Thrifty.” Many scouts and a few dads owe the troop money. Everything from camp outs, yearly dues, and pop corn payments are owed by our members. We still have a few that need to pay for wilderness camp. With a Court of Honor coming up, you don’t want your hard earned advancement held up because you forgot to pay your bills.
EAGLE REQUIREMENTS
The requirements for Eagle will be changing after the first of next year. You will still need the 12 required and the 9 optional merit badges. The Safety merit badge will be dropped from the required list and be replaced by Personal Fitness. The Swimming merit badge, which was with Sports and Personal Fitness, will now be coupled with a choice of Cycling or Hiking. This is all preliminary and will not be official until the new books come out in February 1999.
ICE CREAM NIGHT
Summer is almost over and it is time for the annual “Ice Cream” night for the troop. August 11th is the date. Sam Houston Middle School park is the place. This is a “Class B” meeting with tennis shoes so we can play. Bring your ball glove, a Frisbee, and your family for a great end to the summer. Your family needs to bring some ice cream and some kind of dessert and we will supply the bowls and spoons. Let’s all have some fun. See you there!!!!!

WILDERNESS CAMP
What a great week in the beautiful mountains of New Mexico we had. The weather was very good most of the time, except when PK asked for a cool nap and then the hail came. The food was great as TS, PK, MS, and the Cooking merit badge folks out did themselves again. The fajitas were new this year and seemed to be well received. The chicken salad will probably be replaced with bologna, but the strawberry pound cake was a hit as were the steaks.
BASEBALL RESULTS
The baseball games went well, even without the lights. A few rain delays and some great slides at third base made for excitement and fun. The Pirates won the tournament and took on the Hikers for a winner take all playoff. There were several home runs and some really great fielding. Each team took one game in the “best 2 out of 3 playoff” and the final game was called off due to darkness. Or so this reporter was told. The Pirates will have their names put on the traveling trophy and everyone is looking forward to a good time next year.
HIKERS MEET CHALLENGE
Several of our group wanted just a little bit extra excitement for their wilderness experience. 23 scouts and men climbed Mount Blanca in southern Colorado which is more than 14,300 feet tall. Those attempting the trek were John Banks, Steve Banks, Tres Binkley, Richard Causmissar, Chris Eaves, Dennis Eaves and Lynn Ebeling. Others were Brad Eck, John Filipowicz, Steve Filipowicz, Danny Finley, Matt Hite, Brent Naylor and Mike Palmer. Daniel Scott, Sonny Scott, Jared Slaughter, Josh Smiley, Justin Smiley, Randy Smiley, Grant Snell, Blaine Thompson and Jim Thompson also completed the climb. Loose rock, a broken jeep, mosquitoes. Lots of fun for all and RS was heard to say “I want to climb every mountain in America!!’. Then he collapsed. Nice work guys!!!!
ORDER OF THE ARROW
An election was held a few months ago and the results can now be posted to the whole troop. The following seven scouts and one adult have earned the right to attend the OA Ordeal at MK Brown on August 21 and 22.
Those elected were David Alexander, Stephen Alexander, Chris Eaves, Michael Gray, Blaine Thompson, Chris Coppedge, and John Filipowicz. Dewayne Glasco was chosen by the committee to represent Troop 80.
COURT OF HONOR
The next Court of Honor will probably be set for the first Tuesday in September. Several hundred merit badges and a lot of rank advancement were earned by the scouts of 80 over the summer. Please plan to attend this special troop meeting as this is a chance for the whole family to see what the scouts have achieved. Tripp Austin and Mark Mason will become Troop 80's newest Eagles. Nice work gentlemen.

Service Project.
Troop 80 helped out the National Forest Service by installing hundreds of stays in a new fence to keep grazing cattle from destroying a mountain stream. The scouts all worked hard and learned something about the environment, too. Everyone had a nice walk back. A few energetic scouts tried to build a new “Hoover Dam” next to their campsite and the Army Corp. of Engineers (EW) had to step in and explain why this was not a good thing.
AUGUST RECIPE
A great tasting Dutch oven cake is just 3 ingredients away. In a Dutch oven, heat a can of pie cherries. Spread a dry cake mix on top of the cherries, but do not stir. Pour a can of cherry cola over the dry mix, and again, do not stir. Cook for 20 minutes just like you would any other Dutch oven cake. Open the lid and dig in. Yum!
POP CORN AWARDS
Did you sell popcorn earlier this year? Did you turn in all your money? Did you forget that along with the money you earned toward camps, you also earned some nifty prizes? Be at the next CoH.
STORIES NEEDED
This newsletter is still in need of some stories. about our scouts for things they do outside of scouting. Did you do something in your church, an award at your school, or a sporting activity? We want to know and so does the rest of the troop. Send your stories to The Editor 5122 W 16th Amarillo, TX 79106.
A SCOUT IS “THRIFTY”
The cost of Scouting is always going up and we at troop 80 want to help. Give us your tired, your outgrown uniforms and hiking boots and we will see that they find a new home. We have a closet of used uniforms that the scouts are welcome to visit.
LAST MINUTE STUFF
The cost of the Philmont camp is $17.00 with location to be determined. A tree lot set-up day has been set for November 14 at 8am. Know any body that needs a job during the Christmas season? Lot 2 needs a manager and it’s paid. The date for the October camp is the 16 - 18 with location to be determined. Last day to earn Eagle under the old system is April 1, 1999.
Dear Mom & Dad:
We are having a great time here at Lake Typhoid. Scoutmaster Webb is making us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. One of our tents and 2 sleeping bags actually got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad's mother and tell her he’s OK. He just can't write because of the cast.
I got to ride on one of the search and rescue jeeps looking for Chad. It was really neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightening. Scoutmaster Webb got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Chad said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up?
The wet wood still didn't burn, but one of our tents sure did. Also, some of our clothes. John is going to look kind a weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Webb gets the car fixed. It wasn't his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Webb said that a car that old, you have to expect something to break down; that's probably why he can't get insurance on it. We all think it's a neat car. Scoutmaster Webb doesn't even care if we get it dirty and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the tailgate. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Webb is a neat guy. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Terry how to drive. But he only lets him drive on the mountain roads where there isn't any traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks.
This morning, all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Webb wouldn't let me because I can't swim and Chad was afraid he would sink because of the cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great!! You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Webb isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about the life jackets.
He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Also, Wade and I threw up. Scoutmaster Webb said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. I have to go now. We are going into town to mail our letters and buy bullets. Don't worry about anything. We are fine.
Love, Cole
P.S. How long has it been since I had a tetanus shot?
